The Buckskin Horse today is a very different animal from
that small prehistoric mare camouflaged by the parched land in which she
had evolved. Represented by two different breed registries in the United
States, the present-day Buckskin is a highly domesticated working animal
that excels both in the show ring and on the ranch. However, there is one
thing that the modern Buckskin shares with that primitive horse: a coat of
dusty brown.
Most horse people, when they see a deer-colored horse with black points
and a black stripe down its back, refer to it as a buckskin. However,
according the both the International Buckskin Horse Association (IBHA) and
the American Buckskin Registry Association (ABRA), "buckskin" is
a term used to describe a number of different coat patterns within the
Buckskin family. In fact, ?buckskin? is not the correct term for a tan
colored horse with black points and a dorsal stripe. This color--known as
"the wild color" in Germany--is actually the color of a true
dun. "Buckskin" by the registries' definition, is a tan horse
with black points. No dorsal stripe is present.
Duns, which are highly desired by those who breed Buckskin horses,
come in a number of shades, which range from light tan to deeper earth
tones. Dun horses show some or all of the "dun factors",
which are the dorsal stripe, leg barring, dark ear tips and edging,
dark shoulder stripe or shadow, dark neck striping or
shadow, cobwebbing (lines extending in varying lengths resembling a spider
web), dark face mask, mane and tail frosting, and mottling.
